Fresh Starts Restaurant & Bakery in
Flossmoor added cooking classes to its schedule of events this
winter.
It gives customers an opportunity to go behind the scenes at
Fresh Starts and to share some of the restaurant's special
recipes, owner Joann Lindholm said.
Last month, our sous chef presented a Valentines and Chocolates
class that focused on desserts and a Mardi Gras class that
covered "everything from gumbo to bread pudding," Lindholm said.
Fresh Starts' wine dinners, which have been offered off and on
for about 12 years, offer instruction about selecting wines.
On March 15, the restaurant plans to present a South African
wine dinner, with an instructor from Cape Classic Wines to teach
participants as they progress through the meal.
The instructor "will start by explaining about the reception
wine, what the grapes are and where the grapes come from. I then
talk about the different foods that we pair to it and why. Then
we do this course by course. It's normally a 4 to 5 course
meal," Lindholm said.
The restaurant, 1040 Sterling Drive, does about six to eight
wine dinners a year; prices range from $55 to $60 per person.
The concept seems to work well.
"We love to educate people on wine as well as different kinds of
food that would go with it. We've done it when we kick off a new
menu," Lindholm said. "We gain new customers, customers gain new
knowledge of wines." |
